Per Florida Statute 1001.50, in every district authorized to employ a district school superintendent under Art. IX of the State Constitution, the district school superintendent shall be the chief executive. 

In the event of a vacancy, the school board must appoint an interim superintendent to serve as the acting superintendent until the next Superintendent has been selected and under contract.

The Board consider and discuss nominations, determine salary, and appoint an interim superintendent.
